Siri might be grabbing the spotlight at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference 2016, but the company's biggest software star is still the iPhone and iPad operating system: iOS. Apple has just made iOS 10 official at its keynote in San Francisco and is now running through the major new features we can expect from its next big upgrade. - Before diving into iOS proper, Apple introduced a new Apple TV remote app. "A lot of our customers have told us they would love an app on their iPhone with the same capabilities as the Siri remote," said Eddy Cue. The app uses touch, voice to control Siri, and motion controls for playing games. You can enter text with the regular keyboard.
- Another new feature bridging the gap between tvOS and iOS is the automatic download of apps across your devices. Download, for example, the MLB app on your iPhone and it automatically gets installed on your Apple TV as well.
- Extending its Continuity effort to make it easier to work across Apple devices, the company also introduced a new Universal Clipboard, which was greeted with exuberant whoops and cheers. Basically, snippets of text, hyperlinks, and the like that you copy on one iOS or macOS device will be available on all the others.
- This is "the biggest iOS release ever for our users," said Craig Federighi. He notes there are 10 major new features in the new OS. The highlights include a redesigned lock screen with rich notifications, quick interactions with apps, and expanded use of 3D Touch.
- A new "Raise to wake" feature will, as the name suggests, wake the phone's lock screen when it's lifted to give you an overview of notifications and updates. The new notifications look significantly different and, with the use of a 3D Touch, you can respond to and interact with the app sending them immediately. This is very much in line with what Google's been doing with Android.
- The expansion of 3D Touch on the home screen includes widgets for apps that don't require you launching the app at all. You'll be able to see things like the latest sports scores with the ESPN app, and even get into video highlights, without entering the app proper.
- Apple is opening up Siri to developers. Now you'll be able to ask things like "send a WeChat to Nancy saying I'll be five minutes late." That brings up an interface to interact with WeChat directly. Supported apps already include Slack, WeChat, and WhatsApp for communication, as well as Uber, Didi in China, Runtastic, Runkeeper, MapMyRun, and Skype (among others) for VoIP calls.
- Siri now has more contextual awareness. It makes intelligent suggestions based on your current location, calendar availability, contact information, recent addresses, and more. It's Siri growing more and more into the role of an AI or a bot. And yes, it's based on deep learning just like Google's rival system is.
- Also based on deep learning is a major update to the Photos app that adds new object and scene detection for powerful search and sorting on your device. All the AI is local to the device, Apple is keen to stress. The phone will cluster together photos that are most relevant at any moment — trips, photos of the last weekend or last year. It can then automatically edit together highlight reels of particular trips or events. It's just like HTC's Zoe photos. This is part of a new tab at the bottom of Photos called Memories, which shows you highlights and people, a map of locations, and related memories.

is getting an all-new design in iOS. Eddy Cue says the new Maps is "a lot more proactive." Rather like Siri and Photos already are: a lot more predictive stuff being introduced. Maps will offer nearby restaurant suggestions and its redesigned look is extending to navigation: the UI is cleaner and includes traffic information. If there's a lot of traffic ahead, Maps will proactively offer you an alternative route and note how much time it would save. It's part of Apple CarPlay, naturally, and will also channel turn-by-turn directions right into your car's instrument cluster if you want it. Maps, like Siri, is being opened up to developers, who can now make use of its extensions. That will allow you to book and pay for a restaurant, book and pay for a Uber ride, and then track your ride, all without leaving the Maps app.

is also getting in on the refresh fun with "a redesign from the ground up." Eddy Cue says the new, simpler interface makes the music king, implicitly acknowledging that the old UI was a tiny bit convoluted. That being said, the tabs at the bottom appear unchanged: Library, For You, Browse, Radio, Search. Lyrics are also being added in the new version of Music.

The all-new News interface design has some visual affinities with the new Music, showing that Apple is working on a cohesive look across its new apps, with bold, all-caps sans serif titles. Apple News is also getting breaking news notifications and subscriptions in iOS 10. In-app subscriptions are a major new feature for the OS even beyond Apple's own apps.

HomeKit is now also built right into Apple's swipe-up Control Center, so it can be accessed even from your iPhone's lock screen.  on the iPhone is also evolving, In iOS 10, it will have voicemail transcriptions so that you can see what messages have been received without having to listen to them. Additionally, the app can now detect when an unknown caller is potentially phone spam and will label those calls as such.

Messages

 is the most frequently used app on iOS. It's getting rich links in the new iOS version, allowing things like videos to play right in line inside the message. Emoji have been made three times bigger and, much to the crowd's delight, Apple is going to highlight "emojifiable" words, which you'll be able to just tap and automatically turn into emoji. Just like Google's Allo, iOS 10 will allow you to say things using larger or smaller type. Messages is also getting bubble effects, which are just cute animations when displaying messages. Apple Music is integrated into Messages — can play a track right in line. And just like Maps and Siri, Messages are being opened up to developers with iMessage apps.
Among the laundry list of smaller updates: Live Photos are now performed with digital image stabilization and can be edited, while Safari on iPad is adding a new split-screen option in iOS 10. RAW photo editing is also part of the next version update. Apple closed off its presentation by underscoring its emphasis on security with its use of end-to-end encryption "by default" on all its messaging apps. The company also does all the deep learning stuff about the user directly on the device, not creating profiles in the cloud.
Probably the most-requested new addition in iOS 10 went unmentioned during Apple's keynote presentation: stock apps will be made removable. Company CEO Tim Cook had previously suggested that Apple would look to allow users to uninstall its default apps — things like Mail, Calendar, Weather, and Stocks — and the next iteration of iOS will indeed give users that extra control and freedom to choose.
iOS 10 will be available as a free update this fall for the following devices: iPhone 5 and higher, iPod touch 6th gen, iPad mini 2 and higher, and iPad 4th generation and the subsequent iPad Air and iPad Pro models. There's a small inconsistency between the presentation and the list of compatible devices on Apple's site, which also includes the 5th generation iPod touch and original iPad mini.

The Chinese manufacturer Coolpad received accolades for its Coolpad Note 3 handset last year. The android smartphone got a lot of appreciation for its specifications and performance. Keeping the trend in mind, the Chinese giant launched a toned down version in the Indian android smartphone market called Coolpad Note 3 Lite. The handset offers high-end specifications at a price of Rs 6,999. We bring you the detailed review of the andoid smartphone, which promises to deliver exceptional performance at a pocket friendly price.

Design and Display

The  Android Coolpad Note 3 Lite looks quite similar to the Coolpad Note 3 in terms of design. The handset flaunts round edges and a golden coloured metal rim that give a stylish and premium look to it. The major difference is in the size. Even though the Coolpad Note 3 Lite is a 5-inch device, it fits perfectly in one hand. The front panel of the device houses three capacitive keys, which are not backlight, and a 5MP front-facing camera at the top with a set of sensors. The android smartphone comes with a textured back panel giving a pleasant and comfortable feel to the user. The rear panel houses a 13MP rear camera with LED flash and a fingerprint sensor.

One needs to remove the back panel to insert the 2 sim and the microSD cards. There is also a 2,500 mAh battery that cannot be ejected. The power button is placed on the right side, while the volume rocker keys are placed on the left side of the Coolpad Note 3 Lite. The 3.5mm headset jack and micro-USB port are placed at the top and bottom edges, respectively.

Coolpad Note 3 Lite features a 5-inch display with 720x1280 pixels resolution. The display of the handset has better pixel density when compared to its sibling (the Coolpad Note 3). The display offers vibrant colour reproduction along with good level of brightness. The display is also responsive and gives good visibility under bright sunlight. You can also adjust the colour temperature of the screen, which benefits a lot while reading something in the night. The viewing angles are also nice making movies and playing games experience a real delight. The display is also protected from scratches with a coating of scratch resistant glass.

Performance and Camera


The Coolpad Note 3 Lite runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop operating system topped with the Cool UI of the company. It consists of unified app launcher-homescreen navigation and a customised interface, which supports various themes. It also comes with customised system apps along with some third party apps.

There is no app drawer in the phone's UI and all the app icons are placed on the phone's homescreen. The phone comes preloaded with a number of apps including WeChat, WPS Office, Facebook, SwiftKey, among others. Some of these preloaded apps were specifically designed for Coolpad including FP Lock, CoolShow, Rock Wallpaper, and Cool store. The user interface is very smooth and works fluidly without any lags.

The Coolpad Note 3 Lite is powered by a 1.3GHz 64-bit Mediatek MT6753 quad-core processor, the phone is the only one in this price range to come with 3GB of RAM. It offers 16GB storage expandable up to 64GB via microSD card. Regarding connectivity, the dual-sim phone comes with support for 4G LTE, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS. Both sim slots support 4G LTE, too.

As per its specifications the Coolpad Note 3 Lite performs very well and it lives up to its expectations. The handset handles all apps thrown at it pretty well and we were able to run ten applications simultaneously without any lag or hiccups. We did not face any heating issues while playing graphic intensive games such as Dead Trigger 2, Spiderman Unlimited, Asphalt 8 and others. The non-removable 2,500 mAh battery lasts a day under moderate usage. The call quality was also good and the device performed well even in low signal areas. Coolpad Note 3 Lite also delivers clear and crisp sound quality both over the headphones and loudspeaker. All-in-all the Coolpad Note 3 Lite scores well in the performance department.


Skipping to the cameras, Coolpad Note 3 Lite flaunts 13MP rear camera with LED flash and a 5MP front camera for selfies. The camera can focus quickly on various objects and there is no shutter lag. The photographs taken during daylight came out well with good amount of detailing and colour reproduction. However, the pictures captured during low light looked average. The camera app is clean and easy to use and has various features, and modes for photography. There is also a Pro mode that lets you control the aperture, ISO level, brightness and colour settings.

The 5MP front camera produced some good quality selfies. You can also make use of the fingerprint sensor to click selfies, which makes it much easier to capture some of your great selfies and groupfies. The fingerprint sensor works like a shutter release button and you just need to tap on it once for clicking selfies.


Verdict

The Cooplad Note 3 Lite comes with a price tag of Rs 6,999 and offers high-end specifications such as quad-core CPU, 3GB RAM, HD display, 13MP rear camera and a fingerprint sensor. It is a good option for the people looking for a complete package of high-end specs and budget price.

We also considered some alternatives of the Coolpad Note 3 Lite, like the Xiaomi Redmi 2 Prime or the Intex Aqua Power Plus, which fall under the same price bracket, but lack some of the features available in Coolpad.

The third week of July 2016 saw the launch of the UK's Cloud Infrastructure for Microbial Bioinformatics (CLIMB)— probably the largest dedicated cloud microbial bioinformatics resource in the world. Cloud Infrastructure for Microbial Bioinformatics (CLIMB) is a collaboration between academic and computing staff at the Universities of Bath, Birmingham, Cardiff, Swansea and Warwick.
The impressive scale of the Cloud Infrastructure for Microbial Bioinformatics (CLIMB) computational infrastructure matches its ambitions as a national resource for the UK's medical microbiology community and our international partners. However, size isn't everything—Cloud Infrastructure for Microbial Bioinformatics (CLIMB) also represents a user-friendly, one-stop shop for sharing software and data between medical microbiologists in the academic and clinical arenas. 
An exciting feature of Cloud Infrastructure for Microbial Bioinformatics (CLIMB) is our use of "cloud computing". This means that rather than dozens, or even hundreds, of research groups across the country having to set up and maintain their own servers, users can access shared pre-configured computational resources on demand. Key to this set-up is the concept of virtualization, which allows users to work in simulated computer environment populated by virtual machines (VMs), which sit on top of the physical hardware, but look to the user just like conventional servers. Perhaps a useful analogy is with the digitization of images or text, which allows an object to be stored and reproduced indefinitely without loss of quality. 
Virtualization is widely used to consolidate many VMs on to a single physical machine, ensuring efficient use of hardware.  However, this approach has several other important advantages. As with other digital objects, virtual machines can be stored and shared with ease. Thus, you can launch a VM, install programs and pipelines tailored to microbial bioinformatics and then take a snapshot or image of the customized virtual server. These snapshots can then be stored, copied and shared with others in the research community, freeing downstream users of the hassle of installing complex programs and their often-troublesome dependencies. 

Beyond-Pokemon-Go-Interact-With-Real-Objects


An example here is CLIMB's use of the Genomics Virtual Laboratory (GVL), which comes pre-installed on one of our standard VM offerings. GVL, which was developed in Australia, provides access via the web and command line to a virtual desktop, a personal Galaxy server, together with fully featured environments for the programming language R and the iPython Notepad. Crucially, GVL also provides access to Torsten Seemann's groundbreaking Nullarbor pipeline, which incorporates a range of microbial bioinformatics analyses, while presenting results as a simplified web report . 
However, it is important to stress that the advantages of virtualization go beyond mere efficiency. The creation of multiple standardized VMs with pre-configured software and settings will facilitate training in microbial bioinformatics. Furthermore, the ability to encapsulate a complex server environment into a publishable digital object will allow the entire community to explore and exploit published pipelines and guarantee that complex bioinformatics analyses can be replicated, enhancing the reproducibility of science. 
All this would mean nothing if the system were a private playground for the CLIMB investigators. Instead, CLIMB has been set up as a national facility, with access provided free-of-charge to academic medical microbiologists and microbial bioinformaticians within the UK. But we see CLIMB as more than an academic facility: instead, we hope it will act as a bridge between academics and public health professionals, facilitating sharing of skills, knowledge and approaches between the two communities, as well as exchange of software and data.  We are pleased to note that the system has already seen early exploratory use by Public Health Wales, Public Health England and the Animal and Plant Health Agency. We anticipate that our virtualization approach will facilitate the development of standard operating procedures in clinical and public health microbiology, suitable for national or international accreditation.

The augmented-reality game "Pokémon Go" may be the hottest thing in mobile gaming right now, but new advances in computer science could give players an even more realistic experience in the future, according to a new study. In fact, researchers say a new imaging technique could help make imaginary characters, such as Pokémon, appear to convincingly interact with real objects.
A new imaging technique called Interactive Dynamic Video can take pictures of real objects and quickly create video simulations that people, or 3D models, can virtually interact with, the researchers said. In addition to fueling game development, these advances could help simulate how real bridges and buildings might respond to potentially disastrous situations, the researchers added.
The smartphone game "Pokemon Go" superimposes images onto the real world to create a mixed reality. The popularity of this game follows a decades-long trend of computer-generated imagery weaving its way into movies and TV shows. However, while 3D models that can move amid real surroundings on video screens are now commonplace, it remains a challenge getting computer-generated images to look as if they are interacting with real objects. Building 3D models of real items is expensive, and can be nearly impossible for many objects, the researchers said.

Now, Interactive Dynamic Video could bridge that gap, the researchers said.
"When I came up with and tested the technique, I was surprised that it worked quite so well," said study lead author Abe Davis, a computer scientist at the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Analyzing movement

Using cameras, this new technique analyzes tiny, almost imperceptible vibrations of an object. For instance, when it comes to curtains, "it turns out they are almost always moving, just from natural air currents in an indoor room," Davis told Live Science.
The distinct ways or "modes" in which an object vibrates help computers model how it might physically behave if an outside force were to interact with it. "Most objects can vibrate and move a certain amount without a permanent change to their shape," Davis said. "To give you an example, I can tap on a branch of a tree, and it might shake, but that's different from bending it until it snaps. We observe these kinds of motions, the kind that an object bounces back from to return to a resting state."

In experiments, Davis used this new technique on images of a variety of items, including a bridge, jungle gym and ukulele. With a few clicks of his mouse, Davis showed that he could push and pull these images in different directions. He even showed that he could make it look as if he could telekinetically control the leaves of a bush.
Even 5 seconds of video of a vibrating object is enough to create a realistic simulation of it, according to the researchers said. The amount of time needed depends on the size and directions of the vibrations, the scientists said.
"In some cases, natural motions will not be enough, or maybe natural motions will only involve certain ways an object can move," Davis said. "Fortunately, if you just whack on an object, that kind of sudden force tends to activate a whole bunch of ways an object can move all at once."

New tools

Davis and his colleagues said this new technique has many potential uses in entertainment and engineering.
For example, Interactive Dynamic Video could help virtual characters, such as those in "Pokemon Go," interact with their surroundings in specific, realistic ways, such as bouncing off the leaves of a nearby bush. It could also help filmmakers create computer-generated characters that realistically interact with their environments. And this could be done in much less time and at a fraction of the cost that it would take using current methods that require green screens and detailed models of virtual objects, Davis said.


"Computer graphics allow us to use 3D models to interactive simulations, but the techniques can be complicated," Doug James, a professor of computer science at Stanford University in California, who did not take part in this research, said in a statement. "Davis and his colleagues have provided a simple and clever way to extract a useful dynamics model from very tiny vibrations in video, and shown how to use it to animate an image."
Major structures such as buildings and bridges also vibrate. Engineers can use Interactive Dynamic Video to simulate how such structures might respond to strong winds or an earthquake, the researchers said.
"Cameras can not only just capture the appearance of an object, but also their physical behavior," Davis said.
But, the new technique does have limitations. For example, it cannot handle objects that appear to change their shape too much, such as a person walking down the street, Davis said. Additionally, in their experiments, the researchers used a stationary camera mounted on a tripod; there are many technical hurdles to overcome before this method can be applied using a smartphone camera that might be held in a shaky hand, they said.
"Also, sometimes it takes a while to process a video to generate a simulation, so there are a lot of challenges to address before this can work on the fly in an app like 'Pokémon Go,'" Davis said. "Still, what we showed with our work is that this approach is viable."
Davis will publish this work later in August as part of his doctoral dissertation.
